Location: Ireland (Onsite – laboratory-based role)

On behalf of our client, we are recruiting for a Microbiology Medical Scientist to support the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of a microbiology laboratory within a regulated medical diagnostics environment.

About the Role

The Microbiology Medical Scientist will play a critical, hands-on role within a microbiology laboratory, supporting daily laboratory operations while ensuring full compliance with health, safety, quality, and regulatory standards. This position involves preparing microbial cultures and reagents, performing microbiological testing, maintaining laboratory equipment, and supporting non-scientific staff working with live organisms.

The role requires strict adherence to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), biosafety protocols, and quality systems, with close collaboration across Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), Facilities, and cross-functional teams to maintain a safe and efficient laboratory environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the safe and compliant operation of the microbiology laboratory at all times.

  • Prepare microbial cultures, reagents, and materials required for laboratory activities.

  • Perform microbiological testing to support laboratory and operational requirements.

  • Write, maintain, and enforce laboratory procedures and equipment-related protocols.

  • Operate, monitor, and maintain laboratory equipment to required standards.

  • Support and train non-scientific staff in safe handling of live organisms.

  • Facilitate laboratory access and induction for professional visitors.

  • Conduct routine safety checks, walkthroughs, and audits in line with biosafety regulations.

  • Maintain accurate laboratory records, logs, and documentation in compliance with GLP and QA standards.

  • Manage laboratory inventory, including monitoring stock levels and restocking supplies.

  • Support internal and external audit activities.

  • Assist in identifying and implementing best-practice operational procedures.

  • Collaborate with EHS, Facilities, and other internal teams on safety and quality initiatives.

  • Contribute to the introduction of new ideas, processes, and technologies within the laboratory.

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Registered on the Medical Scientists Register (CORU).

  • Fellowship or eligibility for Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Laboratory Science (FAMLS) or equivalent.

  • Membership or eligibility for Membership of the Academy of Medical Laboratory Science (MAMLS) or equivalent.

  • Minimum of 2 years post-qualification experience in a hospital or clinical microbiology laboratory setting.

  • Strong understanding of GLP, biosafety requirements, and quality assurance standards.

  • Working knowledge of ISO 15189 requirements.

  • Up-to-date knowledge of antimicrobial susceptibility testing and associated guidelines.

  • Experience using laboratory information systems.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong planning, organisation, and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

Desirable

  • Experience supporting audits and regulatory inspections.

  • Experience working in regulated medical diagnostics or MedTech environments.

  • Exposure to training or supporting non-scientific laboratory staff.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: €25,000 – €30,000 per annum, aligned to part-time hours.

  • Part-time position.
